Eyes speak a thousand words…
We believe that our culture refers to religions, beliefs, customs, arts and the generic lifestyle of people. While culture is a holistic amalgamation of diverse sub-cultures like language, music, dance and food, dance is one sub-sect that plays a major role in expressing our emotions and interacting with the society at large through various forms of rhythmic gestures. The entire crowd was swayed by the entry of the most amazing dancer and actor, Ms. Shobana who mesmerised the audience through her walk to the dais. Timeless grace of Bharatanatyam unfolded on stage when the legendary dancer enchanted the gathering by performing the welcome dance with some lucky ones.
To most, she might be the Goddess of dance but to me, she is the undiluted beauty of the original dance form. Shobana founded the school for classical Bharatanatyam dance, Kalarpana. The aim of the institute is to spread this cultural form throughout the world. In an interactive session with the choreographer Ms.Shobana, she expressed her views on balancing the role of a teacher and an actor:”I’m a person who needs to keep working in a creative chakra all the time. That’s what provides me with energy“. When asked about her students at Kalarpana, she smilingly handed the microphone over to one of her accompanying students. The dancing diva’s student had no words to express her feelings on being trained by the most dignified dancer and hence touched her feet in respect. The dancing queen added more about Kalarpana by saying that this is her family and that her students are her “children” with whom she shares a good rapport. Under its umbrella Kalarpana extends its support to the physically challenged and the environmental movement. When questioned on her reaction towards winning the national award, she said, “it was a dream come true for an actress on the threshold of stardom”.
Keeping the momentum going, the dancing superstar was given the task of enacting on a few clips which she gracefully accepted and kept the audience awestruck with her beauty and radiance. Not only did she perform extraordinarily but also participated in our version of ‘rapid fire’ with witty and quick answers. An ideal idol for many, Shobana left the entire audience spellbound by her commitment to reach beyond the ordinary.
