PICTURE PERFECT !!

Kodak film Roll Guess the camera that took  maximum picture in 2009 in India and the camera that took loads of picture in USA ?!  Can you    Guess…!!

We try getting a perfect photo from a studio (or) we used to buy a film role, fixed it in a camera, brought batteries, we used to search for  light – take pictures and have to finish the role (36 snaps) and took it to the color lab to get the negative washed and then discard the out of focus snaps and gave the best ones for print after marking, and bought an album only to store it and have to safeguard the  photos and the negative also. “you press the button, we do the rest,” George Eastman put the first simple camera into the hands of a world of consumers in 1888. In so doing, he made a cumbersome and complicated process easy to use and accessible to nearly everyone.   Eastman had a goal to make photography “as convenient as the pencil,”.Kodak has led the way with an abundance of new products and processes to make photography simpler, more useful and more enjoyable. Can you believe  seven years before, this is how we all used to take pictures.

Then came the  digital cameras! This made life easier to take pictures? Film roles were out of fashion and digital sweeped the market.

Now just pause and think, how we take pictures and how many do we take!

How do we store!

How do we upload.

Today the camera that takes the maximum pictures is the Nokia  in India and the I Phone in USA.

The way images touch upon peoples life has completely changed. The way we store, the way we showcase and way the world see it….is changed.

What is Kodak doing? Remember, once they were ruling the world in photo industry.

When you don’t see the world changing and change accordingly what happens.!!?  How can Kodak get back to glory in photography.  Share your thoughts.

They had unwisely expanded into unrelated industries like pharmaceuticals; and failed to continue inventions in the main business.

  2. Sanjay.v.k says:

Its time for them to change their marketing strategy and probably concentrating on Production of standard “LENS” and be a competitor for Carl Zeis. Not an easy task, but probably they can have a try.

  3. RamPrasanth says:

I remember only Kodak as brand which I was aware 10-15 years back. This brand name is still existing in my mind but not their products. Nikon and Canon took over the professionals hearts with their technology and product upgrades, where mobile phones with their easy features and usage made the common man to come away from the old point and shoot cameras… Kodak is coming up with latest technology and products, but people think it is an old brand which is cheap and go for the latest brands!
I think Kodak lost its brand value due to the latest brands…

How to change peoples mindset? Marketing!!!

  4. rupali rao says:

i recently read an article comparing digi cams n the older cameras…this kind of reminded me of it. the suggestion for making lenses is good but kodak can also try making digital cameras themselves..they aftrr all they did excel in film roll business

  5. Alvin Saldanha says:

    A fascinating case study.

  6. Komal says:

Its well said by Woodrow Wilson, “We should not only use the brains we have, but all that we can borrow.” Kodak has to do exactly d same!! change d idea and cm out wit different USP. Its like If you know your strength it never becomes a weakness. If the market knows your strength then it becomes a weakness.

  7. It is interesting and informative and I would love to go further with this topic / not sure what it is) though hotwire

  8. VIVEK G NAIR says:

KODAK with their old brand name can negotiate with the premier mobile phone companies and come to an agreement to use KODAK cameras in the phones…
(Its like how most of the computers use pentium processors…)
So if that is possible then it might help KODAK to bounce back effectively into world of cameras & photography, which was once ruled by them…

  9. Akhil Rasheed says:

The one way which i believe for Kodak to get back to the glory of photography is that they have to come up with high technological DCS but still according to me its difficult to get back to their old range because even though people remember the brand name, kodak has lost its brand value to a large extend.
We the people are never going back to those (36 snaps) old film roll camera’s, the only thing is that they have to come up good.

  10. mansoor says:

kodak, no doubt that its powerful brand name..still exist in our mind but we forget their products..
in2008 ,Kodak wins the British Columbia Technology Industry Association Impact Award for Excellence in Product Innovation. In January 2009, Kodak posted a $137 million fourth-quarter loss and announced plans to cut up to 4,500 jobs. whats d exact problem of kodak… In the era of space-age technology, they have to come up with new inventions and technology and also diversify their business to the mobile phone… kodak invented digital camera but it was not so popular… cannon and nixion doing well…. i think kodak have problems in marketing also…

We the people will never go back to those (36 snaps) old film roll camera’s, the only thing is that they have to come good with unique, interesting and attracting ideas.

  12. Ajmal says:

Kodak is a brand which will remain in our head, but when CANON and NIKON came in to picture Kodak could not survive in the DCS section, but they are keeping up by introducing the new Kodak play sport camera’s for the adrenaline junkies which can be used even underwater for snaps and videos. The Kodak brand wagon has even introduced single use cameras which is cheap.
But i dont think a michaelnicknichols would carry around a CANON or a NIKON to do his photography, he would surely use the Kodak colour negative films to get the sharpness and smoothness for his photography.
You can turn your heads away from a Kodak film roll but you can never ignore it, coz i see my childhood pics only because my dad had a camera and it had a Kodak film roll in it.

  13. Rasika.K.K says:

I think KODAK can come up wit mobile phones wit cameras which would take clear pictures even with less pixel..Though it might be hard to enter the market and compete, i think MARKETING can make it possible..And also it can accentuate the camera option as KODAK is well known in its photography field..

(And they can also come up with additional features lik smaller data cables which would be handy…bcoz nowadays this has become an issue.. )

  14. Subasurya.R says:

Options are wide open for KODAK to tie up with NOKIA… Although percentage of photos taken in these days are from mobile phones, one cannot deny the fact that this has done no damage for potential camera market..KODAK can still “keep the balls moving” impart some features which would mainly target and attract the people interested in photography,Journalist ,etc…

  15. Gautham Ranjit says:

In today’s highly competitive market environment, the key to success, the key to survive all lies in the organizations capability to Innovate. We realize that Innovators are ordinary people who think up imaginative ways to do things that transform old products/services into new ones, make processes efficient and effective and find new ways of doing things. This is exactly the need of the hour for Kodak.
Kodak, today has several well established competitors in the photography sector and it needs to undergo a radical revamp of its branding to ensure a good market share. A good marketing as well as sales strategy combined with a solid focus on its R&D will definitely help Kodak get back its hold on the Photography Industry.

  16. Manas says:

Kodak should implement new marketing strategies and should understand demands of the current consumers. Then only they can get into the minds of the people.

  17. Ajith says:

Kodak once ruled in the cameras & photography market, so to reach to that position they should create good varieties of cameras having good features competing with other companies . Features like camera can take clear pictures even in motion, which can compete with Sony cybershot.

  18. Rasika.K.K says:

(It can also add features like…..they can come up with handy data cables as this is an issue nowadays..so it might be easy for transferring pictures..)

  21. Sonu Pious says:

Kodak was a leading player in the photo industry but Kodak failed to update with time and hence lost its competative edge and other companies gained advantage mainly by updating themselfs with digital tecnology. It would be hard for Kodak to regain its lost edge in this sector, but never the less Kodak should think extensively in investing into R&D or think of acquiring technology through tranfer of tchnology deals with companies in the same sector. Kodak should also focus on innovative marketing strategies to regain its lost competetive edge in the industry.

  22. svetalik says:

Смотрел в плохом качестве, надо глянуть в нормальном.

  23. RAHUL DAMODARAN says:

KODAK has made a good image in the minds of people but
due to certain reasons they had failed to come up in the recent time…(mainly b’cos of the competition and advanced technologies introduced by other camera brands)
so if they want to survive the competition they have to come up with innovative technologies and make new marketing approaches to bring back the lost glory…

  24. ROHITH.M says:

kodak was once the leader in film camera. But nw it have failed to lead the market due to various resons. As we know now the nokia is largest camera selling in India through its mobile brands. From that we can understand the changing camera market.
So to be the king in market,Kodak have to bring out new technoligical and marketing strategies. Some of my suggestion are ; they can produce mobile camera for leading mobile brands, spend more on research and development, produce web cam for leading laptop brands, bring out new digital camera’s.

  25. Mirunalini says:

Its time for Kodak to wake up and come out with new camera features that are not prevailing in the market. It should carve a unique identity of its own like before for which good aesthetics and promotional strategies should be implemented to sustain the rapid race.

  26. Sangeethaa says:

Kodak can take the initiative to form alliances with one of the giants in the market like Sony,Nikon,Cannon etc. This would be beneficial as it can learn the technical know-how of the other company and jointly come out with new product.
